Why it won't settle
Grief isn't a problem to solve. It's something to finish.
When grief keeps coming back, it's often not because you haven't thought about it enough. Something in it never got finished. Most of the time it's one of three things.
It's waiting to be said
There are words you never got to say. A goodbye, a sorry, a thank you, a why. They sit in your throat and come back at night.
It needs: your voice, out loud, once.
It's waiting to be seen
You carried it quietly so others wouldn't have to. You stayed strong. Nobody really saw how much it cost.
It needs: a witness, even for one minute.
It's waiting to be set down
Part of you holds on because letting go feels like forgetting them. So you carry the weight to keep the love.
It needs: permission to keep the love and put down the weight.
Where the stone comes from. Setting a stone into water to mark a loss shows up in many places and many traditions. The free practice here is our own simple version. It isn't a Lakota ceremony, and we don't claim it is. Those ceremonies belong to the Lakota people, who are still here and still practice them.
